Nintendo is hoping to stir a little nostalgia among 80s gamers with a neat NES-themed version of its current 3DS XL handheld console.

The firm is launching the console with a retro paint job in the United States on October 10 as an exclusive with the Gamestop retailer.

It’ll be priced at $199, which is around £122, but it is not expected to arrive in the UK.

The company is also releasing a Super Smash Bros-themed design that arrives on September 19 and Persona Q-styled device, which will go on sale in November.

However, the new designs will feature on the current versions of the consoles rather than the improved devices scheduled to go on sale in Japan next month. They're launching next year.

The ‘New’ Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL will gain faster processors, dual analogue controls and new shoulder buttons. Both devices will now have a microSD card slot (rather than an SD card), NFC connectivity and a replaceable battery.

The smaller 3DS itself has a larger screen (3.88-inches compared to 3.5-inches) and a more rounded design which mirrors the build of the 3DS XL.

Those in the market for a 3DS might be better off waiting until the much improved consoles go on sale, but that NES-styling might just be too tempting for some.
