Video game developer Blizzard has scrapped its new MMO game, Titan, after seven years of development.
The company behind World of Warcraft revealed the news in a Polygon interview.
Titan represented the company's next massively multiplayer online game after the immensely popular World of Warcraft, so expectations were sky high despite the developer never having officially confirmed the game.
"We had created World of Warcraft, and we felt really confident that we knew how to make MMOs," said CEO Mike Morhaime, "so we set out to make the most ambitious thing that you could possibly imagine. And it didn't come together."
According to Morhaime, the company simply "didn't find the fun" in its troubled new creation.
Of course, this isn't the first time Blizzard has scrapped a game deep into development. Neither StarCraft Ghost nor Warcraft Adventures saw the light of day.
But the fact that Titan was in development for such a protracted period, and was seen as a direct follow on from the biggest MMORPG ever, makes its cancellation especially noteworthy.
Blizzard's Chris Metzen also spoke of a "sense of inertia and obligation" that the company felt following the lengthy success of World of Warcraft, which resulted in the company ploughing straight into another MMO.
But the company realised that it didn't want to be known as "the MMORPG company."
The company's recent fruitful experiments with small-scale games like Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm appear to have shown the company that they don't need to make sprawling mega-budget epics. As such, the future may be small for this massive video game developer.
