Google Play Newsstand arrives on iOS to replace Currents

Google Newsstand now available on iOS

Google has finally unleashed its popular Newsstand content curation app on iOS devices.

The Flipboard-like application, which has been available on Android since last November, allows users to pull together news articles blog posts from their favourite online portals and access them in a single app.

The launch of Newsstand, complete with Google’s new Material Design paint job, replaces the existing Currents app, which has received little attention from the firm of late.

The superbly designed new application allows users to browse 'Topics' such as News, Business, Entertainment, Sports, Entertainment, Highlights and Technology, in neat scrolling, card-based interface.

Users will also be able to tap on publishers (Google says it has hundreds on board) in order to see a stream of content from that particular outlet, while tapping on a topic will take you to related stories. They will be able to add both publications and subjects to ‘My Library’ library in order to personalise the experience. The more iOS device owners use the app, the better it gets to know them.

Newsstand patrons will also be able to ‘Explore’ stories on genres like Crafts & Hobbies, Food & Drink and Men’s Lifestyle.

The app brings a little competition to apps like Flipboard, Instapaper and Pocket which have specialised in creating slick personalised digital magazines, which only feature their favourite content.

Newsstand is available to download for iPhone and iPad today, although it’s yet to be optimised for the iPhone 6 Plus.
