Huawei considering budget Arsenal phone releases

Following the recent release of the Huawei Ascend P7 Arsenal Edition, manufacturer Huawei has revealed it could launch a wider range of football-themed phones.

With the company looking to capitalise on its sponsorship tie-in with the London-based Premier League club, Huawei has teased the potential introduction of more affordable Arsenal phones.

“Just after the World Cup, we announced the Arsenal Phone,” Huawei Product Director James Powell said speaking with TrustedReviews recently.

“We could create budget versions [of the Arsenal Phone], and we may well do.”

He added: “There is a market who would buy the budget phone. In time that is something we could do.

Despite hinting at more wallet-friendly Arsenal Phone releases, Powell failed to put a timeframe on the prospective arrivals.

Instead, the product head suggested that a cheaper Arsenal phone might not be on the cards anytime soon.

“At the moment it is about creating something that is very premium and reflects the typical season ticket holder,” he told us.

“As part of our Arsenal partnership we are working with all of their content teams around building the UI, the branding and creating a premium experience from the start.”

The existing Huawei Ascend P7 Arsenal Edition is a standard P7 which has been given a makeover to adorn the club’s motif on its rear.

The 6.5mm thick phone boasts a 5-inch, 1080p Full HD display alongside a 1.8GHz quad-core processor.

Packing 2GB of RAM alongside a 13-megapixel primary camera, the P7’s specs sheet is further enhanced by an 8-megapixel forward-facing snapper and Google’s Android 4.4 KitKat OS.

For those who fear there might not be a market for a single Arsenal phone, let alone multiple, Powell stated: “There is a supporter base of over 150 million people around the world, many of which never go to the game.”

Further teasing the potential arrival of more tie-in devices, he added: “There will be a number of UIs. The one we have at the minute is very Arsenal-ified and red.”
