Forget the iPad, Android tablets are on the rise as Google reveals Android now accounts for 62 per cent of global tablet shipments.
Despite the iPad maintaining dominance as the leading single device in the tablet market, Android is now far outstripping iOS in terms of total number of tablet devices shipped.
“We are seeing amazing growth in Android tablets,” Sundar Puchai, Google’s Senior Vice President for Android and Apps said speaking during the Google I/O keynote.
He added: “Android tablets accounted for 39 per cent of all shipments two years ago. As of this I/O, Android accounts for 62 per cent of all shipments.”
Although shipments do not equate directly to sales, Puchai was keen to stress that Android tablets were performing strongly on this front too.
“We are seeing usage track shipment,” the Google VP stated. Using YouTube usage as a mark point, he added that Android tablets now accounted for 42 per cent of all tablet-based usage, up from 28 per cent two years ago.
Leading Android tablet makers include Samsung and Acer, with Amazon’s range of heavily skinned Fire devices not included in Google’s figures.
