iPhone 5S motion sensor at play
The much reported accelerometer issues faced by the iPhone 5S since its launch have been completely fixed by Apple's iOS 7.03 update.
Around two weeks ago we first reported on the problem, when it was found that the new iPhone 5S's orientation sensors were not proving to be as accurate as the iPhone 5's.
Apple's own in-built spirit level app showed a consistent two to three degree discrepancy, as did the preloaded gyroscope app. Running a motion-sensitive game such as Real Racing 3 revealed the potential practical issues, with cars automatically steering left.
Then last week we reported on the possible source of these problems - a new sensor component. Apple had switched from a Bosch sensor to an STMicroelectronics equivalent, but the new part was out of whack on the bias front.
This week Apple launched an update to iOS 7 that fixed a number of bugs and snags, and also added whole new features. iOS 7.03 introduces iCloud Keychain support, which formulates, stores and syncs unique passwords across all of your Apple devices.
Perhaps most significantly of all, iOS 7.03 has been shown to have fixed those iPhone 5S (and iPhone 5C) accelerometer issues.
Following a tip off from a source within Apple, VentureBeat took its iPhone 5S for a post-update spin. It found that the previous three degree discrepancy had disappeared, as demonstrated through Apple's spirit level app.
In our initial report we asked the question, "is this the latest Apple gaffe following Antennagate and the Apple Maps debacle?" It would appear as though the answer, following this swift and seemingly comprehensive software fix, is no.
