PS4 graphics could soon be near photorealistic claims Sony
Near photorealistic character graphics could be introduced to games within the PS4’s lifecycle, Sony has ambitiously predicted.
Although unlikely to be a feature of many titles, Mark Cerny, lead system architect on the new PS4 has predicted that later in the new PlayStation’s cycle, developers could bring characters that are convincing enough to make gamers “forget sometimes that we’re looking at CGI.”
Suggesting that more realistic character graphics could bring games in line with movies in terms of emotional engagement, Cerny, speaking with Edge-Online stated that as costs come down, games will possess the same narrative ability as big blockbusters.
"We are at the point in the PlayStation 4 generation where we will forget sometimes that we're looking at CGI rather than captured video," he said. "I don't think it will be indistinguishable. I just think that at times we'll be able to forget, and it will depend on lighting and depend on the scene.
Suggesting that near photorealistic gaming will not be an ever-present feature, he added: "I don't think we'll be consistently able to be at that point so if you used video, you really would be drawing attention to the fact that the actors really don't exist in the game's world."
Highlighting photorealistic characters as a final stumbling block for more convincing and engaging gaming experiences, Cerny stated: "If you look at games and you look at film, in film no matter how much cheaper your production is, you have access to emotion because you have access to the human face.”
He added: "In games that's the most expensive thing – the human body is the most expensive thing you can try to put in your game – at least a human who looks like a human.
"So it takes tens of millions of dollars to do what film can do on many levels for just a few hundred thousand dollars. It took a while for the technology to get to the point where we could really put something compelling in there on the narrative side."
The PS4 was formally unveiled earlier this year and will go head-to-head with the upcoming Xbox One for console supremacy when the two consoles hit retailers later this year. A PS4 release date has been pegged for during the “2013 holiday season.”
Running an eight-core processor alongside 8GB of RAM, the PS4 will come boxed with Sony’s new DualShock 4 controller which features a touch sensitive input strip on the front and a ‘Share’ button for speedy gaming clip uploads. A PS4 price has been confirmed as £349.
