Konami has confirmed that PES 2014 won’t be coming to the Xbox One or PS4 over concerns that the next-generation console uptake will be slow.
PES 2014 is only shipping for the current Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles, as Konami isn’t sure how fast consumers will migrate to the next-generation offerings.
Manorito Hosoda, a marketing executive at Konami, said the developer is working on making PES 2014 the best it can be for Xbox 360 and PS3 before moving on to the Xbox One and PS4.
“We’re not sure how quickly the uptake of the next generation will go. The fan base is with the current gen, and before moving on we want to make a good game with the new engine", said Hosoda
Built on the new Fox engine, Konami has already promised that the new PES 2014 will offer next-gen equivalent visuals.
Konami’s PES games already have an installed user base of more than 100 million, whereas the next-generation console launch titles will have a significantly smaller audience.
The PES series is currently outsold by FIFA around 20:1 in the UK, so Konami is understandably worried about losing any of its established fan base.
“We’re kind of damned if we do and damned if we don’t,” said Jon Murphy, another representative for PES 2014, on the next-gen launch dilemma. “I think we’re in a slightly different position [to FIFA], because we’ve been criticised in the past about producing a ‘next-gen’ version when we weren’t ready.”
The PES developer faced great difficulties adapting its PS2 engine for the PS3 when the current console was launched. This meant that early PES games on the PS3 were flawed and received great criticism.
“We can’t get away with producing a version that isn’t absolutely shit-hot on next generation. I think we want to be confident when we do bring something out and not in a position where people are criticising us for producing a sloppy, second rate port.”
A precise PES 2014 release date has yet to be outlined, but it will be landing on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 before the end of year.
“We’re going to produce something that puts us back to where we should be in terms of quality.”
