Google has finally launched an iPad version of its Google Maps app, some seven months after the initial iPhone version.
Google Maps 2.0 represents a complete revamp of the iOS app as part of an initiative to bring a sense of uniformity across all of the versions (including Android). Most excitingly of all, this means that the app is now available as a native iPad app.
As announced by Google last week, this means that the app now has a custom iPad interface. Hitting the search bar now overlays the map itself with a selection of Google Now-style navigation cards.
In the same way, searching for a route will bring up the main suggested route as a card, stacked on top of a bunch of possible alternatives. Tapping one of these routes will overlay a zoomed-out map overview with a scrollable list of turn-by-turn directions.
The new iPad-friendly Google Maps looks and handles very slickly indeed, but it also comes with a bunch of new features for iPad and iPhone owners alike.
Version 2.0 now features improved navigation, which incorporates live traffic updates and incident reports. It also brings a new Explore feature that helps you to discover local favourite attractions, popular eating spots, hotels and more.
Going to a specific location now provides a simple five star rating system and readily accessible reviews from friends, as well as expert Zagat review content.
You'll also find indoor maps of popular locations such as major shopping centres, public transport stations and airports.
Google Maps 2.0 is available now on the iOS App Store as a universal app, and it should also be rolling out to Android users (version 4.0.3 and above) over the coming weeks.
