Cyanogen OS 12 has been released, and OnePlus One owners will be the first to receive it.
Android customisation fans have been waiting impatiently for the latest Cyanogen operating system for some time now.
Now Cyanogen has announced that the new OS is rolling out to OnePlus One users. The OnePlus One shipped with the previous version of Cyanogen's OS, but a fallout between the two companies led to some doubts over the prospects of an update.
Indeed, in recent weeks OnePlus has released its own custom OS based on Android 5.0 Lollipop, Oxygen OS.
All of which means that OnePlus One owners now have a choice of two Android 5.0-based operating systems to install on their phones.
Cyanogen OS is an open and heavily customisable mobile operating system based on Android, and version 12 implements the core improvements made with Android 5.0 Lollipop.
This means that the new OS has taken on Google's Material Design language. Beyond that you get extra theming abilities and "the granular ability to theme individual apps" with a new App Themer feature.
Cyanogen OS 12 also sees the debut of the company's new email app, which is powered by Boxer. This provides power features like Exchange support, multiple account integration, and quick reply responses.

In keeping with Cyanogen's ethos, it's also possible to customise your email experience, from custom LED notifications to determining what happens when you swipe left or right on a message.
OnePlus One owners should be receiving update notifications now, but it's also possible to download the factory image from Cyanogen's website.
