WWDC 2015 - What to expect

Apple has confirmed dates for WWDC 15. Here's what we hope to see

What are the WWDC 2015 dates?

This year, Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC for short) will run between June 8 and 12. As always, it will take place from the Moscone Centre in San Francisco.

So what are we in line to see? Don't expect to glean any information from Apple, but we do know that the event will once again focus on the changes and enhancements coming to the company’s mobile and Mac operating systems.

Hardware announcements are not usually on the agenda at WWDC 2015, but don't discount it entirely. We've seen the company's new MacBook line-up already, and the iPhone 6S and... whatever follows the iPad Air 2 won't be along until the end of the year.

Here's what we ARE expecting to see at WWDC 2015.

iOS 8

iOS 9

WWDC invariably offers the first official glimpse at Apple's next mobile operating system. It should come as no surprise, then, when iOS 9 gets revealed at this year's event.

Early rumours have it that iOS 9 will skip any major new features in favour of improving the stability and usability of iOS 8.

This might be disappointing, but it makes sense. Both iOS 7 and iOS 8 brought about major and much needed changes to Apple's mobile OS, and that has come at the expense of performance in some areas.

As such, early reports have it that Apple is in full-on bug-squashing mode, as well as focusing on boosting the general speed of iOS. It should also take up less space, particularly when it comes to installing updates. 16GB iPhone users rejoice.

iOS 9 might not be the most exciting mobile OS release we've seen, then, but it could just prove to be the best.

Beats Music

One major new feature of iOS 9 could be Apple's highly anticipated new music service. When Apple bought Beats last year, it wasn't just about acquiring the company's garish headphone business.

Apple is expected to launch its own subscription music service based on Beats Music, a Spotify-like service with an advanced curated content element.

With a revamped Music app featuring in the recent iOS 8.4 beta, it seems as if Apple is gearing up for an overhaul on the music front. Don't be surprised to see Beats joining the fray in June.

Yosemite

OS X 10.11

We're not going to lie to you - we know nothing about the follow-up to OS X Yosemite. Not a name, not a set of likely features, nothing. There's scarcely been a peep about it online.

All we know is that there will be a new version of OS X for Mac previewed at WWDC 2015. There always is.

We can speculate that OS X 10.11 won't be a radical overhaul over OS X 10.10. Last year's effort saw a welcome overhaul of the operating system's looks to bring it in line with iOS 7 and now iOS 8.

Apple Watch

Apple Watch

Yes, Apple's first smartwatch has already launched. In fact, some people on the waiting list might only just be getting theirs by the time June 8 rolls around.

The point is, you can bet that the first WWDC to take place since the Apple Watch launch will go big on the new device. Remember that WWDC is primarily for app developers, so Apple will want to instruct and encourage these content makers on the mysterious ways of the Watch.

In particular, we're hoping to see more on native apps for the Apple Watch, as this would address two of the areas in which it seems to be struggling based on early reviews - performance and a distinct purpose that sets it apart from the iPhone.

Apple TV Beats

Apple TV

This one's far from nailed on, and we seem to speculate about a WWDC launch for a new Apple TV model every year.

However, the endless speculation surrounding a supposed new Apple TV certainly appears to be building towards SOMETHING. There have been reports from reputable sources of a web TV service from Apple of late, while the crusty old current Apple TV model received a price drop back in March to accompany the news of an exclusive deal for the HBO Now service.

WWDC isn't typically the location for new Apple hardware, but it's not entirely out of the question. In particular, Apple might want to reveal a new Apple TV here so as to get developers on board early.

It's claimed that the new Apple TV will be a far more powerful and fleshed out platform than before, with third party app support likely to be a key feature. An SDK is needed, then, and what better place to launch that then at the Worldwide Developers Conference?

As we say every year, don't hold your breath for a new Apple TV at WWDC. But there's clearly something cooking in Apple's TV department.

iPad Pro

How about the iPad Pro?

The one outside bet for new iOS hardware at WWDC is the much rumoured iPad Pro. There have been numerous whispers concerning a supposed super-sized high-end tablet from Apple, but so far there's been nothing concrete.

We're not expecting to see the iPad Pro making an appearance at WWDC 2015, but it's not unheard of for the company to turn up to the Moscone Center with a high-end piece of kit. Remember the Mac Pro in 2013?
