Adobe has today launched a version of its popular high-end Lightroom photo editing app for Apple’s iPad.
Adobe Lightroom mobile is intended as a complement to the Lightroom 5 desktop application rather than a full stand-alone app. The intention is that you start your editing while out and about and finish when at home at your desktop.
As that suggests, Lightroom mobile automatically syncs your photo collections with the full Lightroom 5 app. This means that you can make adjustments on the fly and it will all be saved - provided you have internet access, of course.
Despite this synergy with the desktop version, Adobe Lightroom mobile places a full range of editing tools as your fingertips. You get sliders for exposure, saturation, shadows, colour temperature and the like, as well as a crop tool. Adobe provides its own tone presets, too.
You can edit anything from regular smartphone or tablet snapshots to full RAW photos from your DSLR, though of course downloading the latter to work on offline (as the app enables you to do) will quickly fill up your iPad’s limited storage. If you have an internet connection, it’s possible to make such changes without downloading the file.
The good news is that this powerful app operates on the iPad 2 and above, provided that iPad 2 is running iOS 7. An iPhone version is said to be "coming soon," according to Adobe.
The app itself is free, but you need Adobe Lightroom 5 and a Creative Cloud subscription of some kind in order to be able to use it, which is a bit of a bind.
