Sony Smartband launched alongside Lifelog application

Sony has launched the Sony Smartband at MWC 2014, alongside its brand new Lifelog application.

The Smartband is the first in Sony’s line of SmartWear devices and connects with the Lifelog app to record all your activities.

Originally, the Core fitness tracker was unveiled at CES 2014, but has now been given a release date and a brand new accessory range.

“At CES 2014, I introduced SmartWear Experience as representing emotion as well as motion – moving, and being moved” said Kunimasa Suzuki, President and CEO, Sony Mobile Communications. “Now we can reveal exactly what this means, as we bring our first products to market this spring – SmartBand and its innovative core extend beyond fitness tracking, to add colourful, fun entertainment experiences to users’ lives. Entertainment is a part of Sony’s ethos – it’s our culture.”

Sony Smartband Features

The Sony Smartband puts Sony’s Core fitness-tracker on your wrist and is designed to be worn 24/7 to track all your little accomplishments.

It’s waterproof - IP58 - despite the exposed USB port, but don’t expect to take it swimming as you can only keep it underwater for 30 minutes in up to 3m of freshwater. What’s great is that it comes in a range of colours as seen above and below.

Connecting to Android and iOS devices via Bluetooth or NFC, you’ll need to sign into a Sony Entertainment Network account in order to track all your activities.

It has a vibration alert for telling you when you have smartphone notifications, which also doubles up as your sleep monitor and morning wake up call.

The Smartband connects to the Lifelog application that will enable you to “effortlessly capture life and entertainment – places visited, music listened to, games played, books read – and presents it a beautifully visual interface” for Android.

No word on whether that app will come to iOS at any point as yet.

Sony Smartband Release Date and Price

The Sony Smartband will be released in March, with pricing to be announced at a later date.
