Windows Phone users are to be brought in from the mobile messaging dark with Nokia confirming a BBM Windows Phone app is on the horizon.
Making the announcement during its MWC 2014 press conference, Nokia, the leading player on the Windows Phone scene has revealed that a BBM Windows Phone app will launch in the near future.
“Today I am very pleased to announce that BBM is coming to Windows Phone,” Nokia CEO Stephen Elop announced during the company’s launch event.
As well as bringing BBM to the Windows Phone platform, Nokia has confirmed that Photoshop Express and Food Panda are also heading to the growing mobile OS.
Having made the jump from being a BlackBerry handset exclusive last summer, BBM has to date been available only on iOS and Android devices.
Although confirming that a BBM Windows Phone app is in the works, neither Nokia nor developer BlackBerry have yet to confirm an expected launch date for the BBM Windows Phone app.
Despite the new announcement, just last month BlackBerry said there was not enough backing of the Windows Phone platform to warrant a dedicated BBM build.
“It [the continuing lack of a BBM Windows Phone app] is entirely market driven,” David Proulx, BlackBerry’s Senior Director of BBM Business Development told TrustedReviews at CES 2014. “Our initial launch on iOS and Android was a function of the prevalence of those platforms.”
He added: “It is not a statement of intent, and it’s not a strategic or religious thing, it’s just a function of when does it make sense and when is it something that consumers demand in sufficient numbers to make it worth our while and worth their while.”
