Samsung has launched two new processors, the Samsung Exynos 5422 and Exynos 5260, at MWC 2014.
Despite earlier official rumours of the 64-bit Exynos Infinity being unveiled at the Barcelona-based tech show, Samsung has outed two different processors.
The Exynos 5422 is an octa-core processor aimed at high-end devices. It features four ARM Cortex-A15 cores with clock speeds up to 2.1GHz and four smaller ARM Cortex-A7 processors clocked up to 1.5GHz.
Built using the 28nm process, the Exynos 5422 comes with Samsung’s big.LITTLE heterogeneous multi-processing (HMP) making it capable of delivering up to 34 per cent higher performance than the previous Exynos octa-core processor.
HMP means that the cores can work in a combination of conjunctions, or all eight can operate simultaneously.
It is capable of supporting display resolutions like 2560 x 1440p WQHD and 2560 x 1600p WQXGA and is said to be able to reduce power consumption by 10 per cent.
Mass production of these chips will begin in Q1 2014.
The Exynos 5260 is a hexa-core processor designed to be use in the mid- to high-end smartphones. It features two 1.7 ARM Cortex-A15 cores and four 1.3GHz ARM Cortex-A7 cores.
Like the octa-core 5422, the Exynos 5260 uses the big.LITTLE HMP to offer a 42 per cent improvement over the dual-core Exynos 5 processors.
The Exynos 5260 is already in production and has been featured in the Galaxy Note 3 Neo, which will not come to the UK.
The six-core chip supports the same resolution displays as the octa-core variant and comes with H.264, MPEG4 and VP8 codecs for full HD video playback at 60fps.
Sadly, there was no mention of the heavily rumoured 64-bit Exynos Infinity processors actually leaked by the official Exynos Twitter account earlier this month.
