Day one Xbox One sales top one million units

Following the console’s release yesterday, Microsoft has confirmed that day one Xbox One sales topped more than one million units.

Hitting the milestone figure in the console’s first 24 hours on sale, Microsoft has stated that the Xbox One launch has become the biggest console launch in the company’s history, eclipsing early interest in either the original Xbox or last generation’s Xbox 360.

While the one million units day one sales figure sounds highly impressive, this number is sure to include global pre-orders for the console. Earlier this year Sony confirmed that the PS4 achieved more than one million pre-order sales within weeks of the console being made available for advanced purchase.

“Following a worldwide celebration, Xbox One launched in 13 markets on Nov. 22 to great fanfare,” an official Microsoft spokesperson has announced through a statement on the company’s website. “The team is excited to confirm the launch of Xbox One was the biggest launch in Xbox history, with more than one million consoles sold through worldwide in less than 24 hours – surpassing day one Xbox 360 sales and setting a new record for Microsoft.”

With Xbox One stocks already said to be drying up at retailers around the world, Microsoft added: “We are working to replenish stock as fast as possible to meet the unprecedented demand from our customers.”

Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President of Marketing and Strategy, Xbox added: “We are humbled and grateful for the excitement of Xbox fans around the world.”

“Seeing thousands of excited fans lined up to get their Xbox One and their love for gaming was truly a special moment for everyone on the Xbox team. We are working hard to create more Xbox One consoles and look forward to fulfilling holiday gift wishes this season.”

With the Xbox One now available in the UK and 12 other leading nations around the world, the console has been sandwiched by the PS4’s US and UK arrivals. Although current available in the States, the UK PS4 release will be held next Friday, November 29.
