PS4 “can’t save PS Vita”, says analyst

The PS4 won’t be enough to save the PS Vita, despite its focus on Remote Play states one prominent analyst.

Michael Pachter, a notorious video games analyst, has stated that the PS4’s improved Remote Play functionality “won’t save the PS Vita.”

In fact, Pachter went as far as saying that “the Vita is dead, it’s over”, adding to the open criticism the Sony handheld console has had in recent months over poor sales and a rather weak software library.

“I think if they made the PS Vita in different colours it wouldn’t sell more,” said Pachter. “The only thing that’s going to sell more Vitas is a price cut or compelling software.”

The PS Vita has only achieved a fraction of the predicted sales for the handheld console, mainly due to its high launch price.

“God, I shudder to tell you how many units of the Vita were sold this month, but the answer is ‘not very many’.”

Sony has made Remote Play compatibility mandatory for all PS4 games in an attempt to make the PS Vita a more viable PS4 accessory.

Unless a game requires specific PS4 features like the PlayStation Camera, all titles will be required to support PS Vita Remote Play functionality. The PS4 will be required to be turned on at all times and connected to the internet for Remote Play to work, with games then streamed directly to the PS Vita via Wi-Fi.

Despite his cold words against the PS Vita, Pachter still believes Sony’s latest handheld console is a great bit of gaming kit.

“It’s a really great device that nobody thinks they need, so no one’s buying it,” he said before adding, “it is really slick, if you get one you will like it.”

The PS Vita launched in February 2012 for an RRP of around £200. Now the Vita can be purchased for £169.99 Wi-Fi only.

Sony is also tipped to be launching a PS4 and PS Vita bundle for around $500 before the year is out.
