It seems that the iPhone 5C and iPhones 5S are the official names for Apple’s upcoming selection of 2013 smartphones.

Seemingly confirmed by an anonymous industry source on Japanese Apple bog Mac Otakara, Apple will launch the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S later this year.

The idea that Apple’s next flagship will be called the iPhone 5S doesn’t come as much of a surprise, seeing as the Cupertino company has been adding the S to the version of the flagship launched with speedier innards.

It follows in the naming scheme outlined by the iPhone 4S and iPhone 3GS already released as specs bumped versions of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3G.

The first rumours that the budget iPhone could be called the iPhone 5C emerged in late July, when an image of the purported cases for the mid-range device leaked online.

However, it seems that the iPhone 5C branding may not be a rumour after all, if the anonymous industry source is to believe that is. They said the budget iPhone 5C will be made from a composite plastic and fiberglass shell, available in a variety of colours.

This may mean that the mid-range Apple smartphone alternative will be classed as the iPhone 5 Colour, rather than the C referring to the cheaper cost of the device.

With both devices supposedly launching on September 10, we may not have long to wait to see if this source is correct.

iPhone 5S rumours

The source also had some further details to offer on the iPhone 5S. Building on earlier rumours that the iPhones 5S will feature a toughened convex home button with fingerprint scanner made from Sapphire crystal, the next Apple flagship will not feature the square icon on the button.

It is not clear why Apple is supposedly removing the little home square icon, but it could be to signal the difference between the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S.

Along with the standard black and white colour options, the source suggested that the iPhone 5S will launch in a unique gold colour option.
