Sony PS4 - It's not too late to get one

Sony has suggested that although newly placed PS4 pre-orders are no longer guarantee day one availability, a launch date arrival is not totally out of the equation.

Giving a faint glimmer of hope to eager gamers, Sony has stated that while it has closed its own PS4 pre-order store, those looking to secure their next-gen console through a third party retailer might still be lucky enough to receive their advanced ordered PS4 on the same day as the console hits high street store shelves.

Last week Sony confirmed that PS4 pre-orders placed after August 6 would not be guaranteed to arrive on the console’s day of release. However, despite a number of retailers having now ceased taking PS4 pre-orders altogether, Sony has revealed that this does not mean your next-gen console will not necessarily miss the upcoming PS4 release date.

It’s not to say that if you pre-order it now you won’t get it on day one, it’s just a precautionary guarantee,” an official Sony spokesperson told TrustedReviews. They added: “It has been a difficult message to get across.”

Pointing to a combination of high demand and low stock availability for the PS3 follow-on, last week’s news of PS4 pre-orders no longer being guaranteed a day one arrival has seen many retailers change their policies on accepting early orders for the upcoming Xbox One rival.

“Please note that Sony have confirmed all PlayStation 4 pre-orders placed from August 6 will now not be guaranteed for launch,” retailer ShopTo has stated on its PS4 pre-order pages. “You can still pre-order PS4 with us in case we receive cancellations and can fulfil your order for launch.”

While the likes of Sony, Tesco and Sainsbury’s have now all stopped taking PS4 pre-orders altogether, other retailers, including the likes of Amazon, will still take your cash but don’t promise you a console until after the PS4 release date.

“Please note – due to high demand, orders placed for the PlayStation 4 console from August 6 may be received after release date,” reads the Amazon PS4 page. “We will ship orders as soon as we receive sufficient inventory.”

Despite an official Sony spokesperson confirming to us that PS4 pre-orders could still hit early adopters at launch, the company’s official line remains much more sombre.

Pressed on the number of PS4 pre-orders currently placed, a Sony official stated: "Sony Computer Entertainment Europe does not comment on production and we have no further information to share at this time on our release strategy for PlayStation 4 which is scheduled for launch this holiday season."
