Tablet and mobile games will soon rival Xbox 360 and PS3 graphics says EA

The mobile gaming sector have already eaten into sales of console titles and gaming giant EA has warned they could soon pose an even bigger threat.

As avid games await the upcoming arrival of the next-gen Xbox One and PS4 consoles, EA has suggested tablet and mobile app based games will soon feature graphics comparable with current-gen consoles.

Discussing the "next wave" of mobile games, Frank Gibeau, President of EA Labels stated developers will soon be using the same engines behind a mass of Xbox 360 and PS3 titles to create upcoming app-based games.

“In the near future, the next wave of tablets and phones will have nearly Xbox 360 or PS3 capabilities in terms of graphics,” Gibeau said. “Some of our engine technology that used to be console-specific now can, with modifications, be able to power games on tablets and on phones in the near future. We’re just getting ready for that.”

While Gibeau was quick to highlight the upcoming graphical jump mobile games are set to receive, he stressed that there is still considerable work to be do to turn them into big hits, especially when attempting to port games from console bound originals.

“You have to redesign the game,” the EA head stated. “You can’t just bring it over and have a virtual d-pad on the tablet. It doesn’t work.

“You have to re-architect it around touch, voice, camera. Our teams are having a lot of fun with that, reimagining an experience on a tablet using the same graphics and assets in some ways, but completely remixing the meal. Same ingredients, completely different meal. That’s kind of the way we think about it.”
