Battlefield 4 to utilise Xbox One Kinect

DICE has confirmed that Battlefield 4 will be utilising the new Xbox One Kinect when it launches, but hasn’t pinned down exactly how as yet.

Although DICE can’t offer any specific details on how Battlefield 4 will integrate the new Kinect functionality into Battlefield 4, it could confirm that Xbox One users can take advantage of the new technology.

“We have a pretty pragmatic view [on the new Kinect],” said Karl Magnus Troedsson, General Manager at DICE. “Instead of just trying to tick all the boxes of features you can do with new hardware, we look at what actually adds value [for] our players.”

Instead of creating a game that works entirely by motion control, DICE is looking to incorporate Kinect controls into Battlefield 4 in a way that “makes sense” to the current formula of the series.

“When you look at the kind of games that we build – or Battlefield at least – it is a first-person shooter that is very much about skill. Input is really important. You need to have very precise control over what’s going on, and trying to do something like that with motion control input does not make sense – not if you want to keep the same kind of formula of the game as we [have] now. You’d need to build a different kind of shooter.”

Battlefield 4 gamers won’t be asked to change the way they play the upcoming FPS on the Xbox One, but we imagine there is a possibility for voice commands for the BF4 squad.

“But there are other places where it will make sense, and we are going to use it for other things in the games, but we haven’t announced exactly what.”

In May, Activision publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg announced that Call of Duty: Ghosts would also use Xbox One Kinect voice commands, so DICE’s latest announcement could be an attempt to rival the COD franchise.

“We think the improvements to Kinect really excited us because of the level of responsiveness and detail,” said Hirshberg. “We’ve always made sure that we don’t just use new technology for novelty’s sake. We always make sure that it makes the gameplay better. In [Kinect’s] case, we think it will.”
