All six Star Wars films finally set for digital release

All six Star Wars movies will soon be available to download digitally for the first time ever – legally, at least.

Starting April 10, digital retailers like iTunes, the Google Play store, Amazon, and Vudu will be offering the classic sci-fi trilogies.

The Walt Disney Studios, Lucasfilm, and 20th Century Fox say the move is to build anticipation for the release of the next title in the series – Star Wars: The Force Awakens, coming December.

Alan Bergman, president of The Walt Disney Studios, said: “Since the debut of the first film nearly 40 years ago, Star Wars has become a worldwide phenomenon with legions of fans from every generation.”

“It’s only fitting that audiences enjoy this legendary saga and its many fascinating behind-the-scenes stories on a wide variety of platforms, and we’re very excited to finally bring all six films to Digital HD for the first time.”

You’ll be able to buy Star Wars: Episodes I-VI as a complete collection, or individually if you’re not so keen on some of the titles...cough Phantom Menace cough.

What’s more, all six movies come with bonus features that include documentaries, interviews with the production team, deleted scenes, and behind-the-scenes footage of the films’ sets, miniatures, and models.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said: “We’re thrilled that fans will be able to enjoy the Star Wars saga on their digital devices wherever they go.”

“These films broke new ground in technology, design, sound, and visual effects, and we’ve created some very special bonus material which delves into the saga’s rich history, including new and never-before-released conversations between legendary Star Wars artists – the masters who helped George bring his iconic universe to life.”

So how much will it all cost? The whole bundle of movies will mark up at $89 over at the Google Play store, with a $19.99 charge for each individual movie. We’re still waiting on pricing from other retailers.
