Microsoft has confirmed cross-platform multiplayer for Windows 10 and Xbox One later this year.

Taking the stage during Microsoft's Windows 10 conference, Xbox Boss Phil Spencer revealed that Windows 10 will add cross-platform multiplayer gaming between PCs and the Xbox One.

"We think enabling people to play multiplayer games on Windows 10, across Xbox One and Windows 10, will unlock the potential of Xbox Live," said Spencer.

To announce the cross-platform functionality, Spencer invited Lionhead Studios dev Lauren Carter to reveal Fable Legends is coming to Windows 10 PCs as well as Xbox One.

It was then that it was revealed Spencer and Carter were playing the game together on PC and Xbox One simultaneously.

Spencer went on to say that this cross-platform multiplayer functionality would come to other Xbox One games in the future.

However, he did not say which games would get the functionality or when it would arrive.

Microsoft's Executive VP of Operating Systems, Terry Myerson, went on to confirm that the Xbox One would also be getting the Windows 10 universal apps.

"With Windows 10, universal Windows apps come to Xbox One", explained Myerson.

That means apps like Excel, Word and PowerPoint will all be available on Xbox One later this year.

"For developers that want to bring their application over the TV screen this is going to make it very easy for them to do so", added Spencer.
