LG confirms it has round faced smartwatches in development

Round LG smartwatch

A round LG smartwatch is already in development

Despite the LG G Watch having yet to hit retailers, the Korean manufacturer has confirmed it is already working on its own round-faced smartwatches.

With the Motorola Moto 360 having been unveiled back in March, capturing consumer’s imaginations thanks to its round screened design, the smartwatch market looks set to move closer to the design principles of more traditional, analogue watches.

Now, speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews, Chul Bae Lee, Vice President of LG’s Mobile Communications Design Lab as confirmed that LG could well take a few pointers from Motorola and adopt the round smartwatch principle.

In terms of the watches, we are naturally making some experiments in exploring things like [round faces],” Lee told us.

Despite confirming the company had a round smartwatch in at least the early stages of development, Lee refused to be drawn on any timeframe for such a product launch, stating: “I don’t know when that will be happening.”

He added: “Naturally with the watch, as designers, we can make design prototypes but actually when the round type watch will be available I don’t know.”

Although remaining coy on exact launch plans, Lee hinted that a round LG smartwatch could be on the cards sooner rather than later.

He told us: “If the time comes, I want to be in the upfront as much as possible.”

With the Motorola Moto 360 set to launch later this year, recently leaked patents have shown that Samsung is working on a round smartwatch of its own to join up with its Samsung Gear 2 offering.

What’s more, latest Apple iWatch rumours have hinted the Cupertino-based company could also be prepping a circular screened smartwatch, again set for launch later this year.
