Fresh reports have emerged that Apple is testing a larger version of the iPad, but this time with a 4K display.
It’s hard to pick a fault with the iPad Air, but one tiny niggle might be that its 9.7-inch display is slightly less sharp than its rivals.
If reports are to be believed, Apple is working on a new product that won’t so much address these concerns as blow them out of the water.
Chinese language website PadNews claims, via anonymous Foxconn sources, that Apple is testing a new iPad with a larger 12.9-inch display. That’s nothing new to us, but what is fresh is the suggestion that one model of the 'iPad Maxi' will feature a 4K resolution.
Alongside this whopping Ultra High Definition model, which would effectively double the resolution of the iPad Air, Apple is also apparently testing a 2K model. This would be roughly equivalent to the 1080p tablets we’ve already seen on the market.
The same source reckons that the 2K iPad Maxi, or iPad Pro if that’s the way you want to speculate, will launch in April of 2014. The 4K model will then arrive in October of the same year as a kind of mid-term spec bump.
Just last week we reported on the suggestion that Apple had ordered production of a new 12.9-inch iPad for the second half of 2014. Now it seems that this iPad Maxi could return Apple’s Retina display technology to the top of the resolution pile.
