A new generation of USB connection has been announced, with USB Type-C set to be finalised next year with a compact, reversible design.
Developed alongside the current USB 3.1 specification, the upcoming USB Type-C will reportedly measure up at a similar size to a microUSB plug, enabling compatible devices to become even slimmer whilst still enjoying high-speed file transfers.
Although no images of the USB Type-C design have as yet been released, it has been suggested that the new USB standard will take hints from Apple’s Lightning connector and feature a reversible form.
While this might sound like a relatively small improvement, the refined design will allow users to insert the cable without the fuss and fanfare of finding the right-way-up that currently affects current USB offerings.
What’s more, the newly confirmed Type-C USB will act as “the only connector one will need across all devices,” according to select industry experts.
According to Brad Saunders, Chairman of the USB 3.0 Promoter Group, the new USB Type-C standard will “meet evolving design trend in terms of size and usability.”
Discussing the new USB for, Intel’s Alex Peleg stated that the Type-C connector “will enable an entirely new super-thin class of devices from phones and tablets, to 2-in-1s, to laptops to desktops.
He added: “This new industry standards-based thin connector delivering data, power, and video is the only connector one will need across all devices.”
