According to a video game analysis firm, a simultaneous PS4 and Xbox 720 release date would be beneficial to the gaming industry and consumers alike.
With a PS4 release date set for holiday 2013 and the new Xbox 720 tipped to launch sometime in November, a simultaneous release of the two next-generation consoles is believed to be “best for the industry”.
Jesse Divnich, an analyst from video game research and consulting firm EEDAR, suggests that if the PS4 and Xbox 720 launch at the same time, both gamers and the videogame industry would profit.
“It would be best for the industry to see a simultaneous launch of the next generation consoles,” said Divnich. “The combined marketing campaigns from both Microsoft and Sony will act as a catalyst to drive excitement back into traditional consoles.”
Thus, any competition between Sony and Microsoft’s next-generation consoles will be “to the benefit of the consumer,” he added.
Sony’s PS4 console was unveiled at a dedicated event in February, revealing a holiday 2013 PS4 release date and PC-architecture innards. Playing host to an eight-core x86-65 AMD Jaguar CPU with 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, the PS4 will ship with the new DualShock 4 controller. The gamepad introduces a share button for social media integration, a touch panel similar to the rear touchpad of the PS Vita and an LED light-bar in the front for PlayStation Move assimilation.
The new Xbox 720 is due to be revealed at special event on May 21 by Microsoft’s president of interactive entertainment Don Mattrick and the Xbox team. Streamed live on Xbox.com and Xbox Live the Xbox 720 launch will occur at 6pm BST.
Tipped to be packed with similar technology as the PS4, the same x86-65 AMD Jaguar CPU could be seen in both consoles. The Xbox 720 could also feature the remodelled Kinect 2 motion sensor gaming peripheral and be much more focused on being a complete entertainment package than the Xbox 360 console by integrating services like the long-rumoured Xbox TV.
