PS Vita Remote Play required for all PS4 games

All PS4 games will be required to support the PS Vita Remote Play functionality, unless they need the PS4 Eye camera.

PS Vita sales could be revitalised as it has been confirmed that all PS4 games will be compatible with the PS Vita’s Remote Play feature when they launch.

A “trusted PlayStation 4 developer” originally suggested that Vita Remote Play would be mandatory for all PS4 games released, certainly great news for the handheld console, which has struggled to achieve commercial success.

Sony has now confirmed that this will Remote Play compatibility will be mandatory for all qualifying PS4 games on Twitter in a response to an intrigued user.

“Yes, it’s true unless the game requires specific hardware like the camera,” said Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida. “It will be great to play PS4 games on PS Vita.”

Remote Play currently enables PS3 gamers to connect their PS Vita and use it as a controller. Users can use the handheld console as they would a PS3 DualShock 3 controller and play the PS3 game as normal but uses the PS Vita’s screen as the video output.

It is a feature that was one of the PS Vita’s top selling points, but has failed to attract a high enough level of developer support. Sony is looking to improve the Remote Play feature with the PS4, with the console reportedly packing bespoke video encoding software to enable screen-sharing support powered by Gaikai cloud gaming.

As these features will be pre-built into the PS4, game developers will be able to utilise Remote Play far more easily and incur no performance reductions.

The new PS Vita and PS4 compatibility could be shown off at Sony’s pre-E3 press conference on June 10. The Japanese electronics manufacturer is strongly expected to show off the still undisclosed PS4 hardware at E3 too.
