Toys R Us: Nothing prepared us for how big Skylanders became

As Activision unveils the new Skylanders Trap Team game, retail giant Toys R Us has admitted it was shocked by just how big the franchise has become.

Having launched the toys to life gaming movement just three years ago Skylanders has gone on to become a dominant global brand, an expansion that Toys R Us has suggested exceeded all possible expectations.

Skylanders exploded on to the scene in 2011 and has been getting stronger ever since,” Fiona Murray-Young, Buying Director at Toys R Us said speaking with TrustedReviews.

She added: “When we first saw Skylanders we were hugely excited by it. We thought it was fantastic and were like ‘wow, these really are toys coming to life’.

“I don’t think anything prepared us for how big it actually became. It really was a phenomenon and was one of the first toy ranges to be bigger after Christmas than before Christmas.”

Despite the Skylanders series hitting unexpected heights, Murray-Young has suggested the new Skylanders Trap Team game will arrive just in time to give the series a much needed boost.

She told us: “At the moment it [Skylanders] is really ready for something new and I think this absolutely delivers.

“This capturing of the villains and the sound element in the portal, there is a lot of great innovation that has really stepped on. I can see this reigniting [the market].”
