More evidence that Samsung is planning to launch a souped up Samsung Galaxy S5 with a 2K display has appeared in India.
Samsung has been at pains to deny rumours that a superior flagship phone - a Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime, if you will - is in the works.
With the Samsung Galaxy S5 itself less than two weeks old, it’s easy to see why. We can’t see those millions of early adopters being too pleased with the prospect of their high-end smartphone being superseded within a year.
But that’s precisely the scenario we reported on at the beginning of April, when benchmarks for a device labeled the SM-G906S appeared online. This report appeared to hint at a high-end phone with a QHD or 2K display.
Now that same SM-G906 model has cropped up on Indian import site Zauba. According to a manifest, four examples of this mysterious phone were shipped from Samsung’s native South Korea for the purposes of "R&D" (that’s research and development, in case you were wondering).
It’s fairly common practice for such test units to be sent out ahead of production, with a number of previous Samsung devices leaking out in this way.
The rumoured specs for this Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime include a 5.2-inch 2560 x 1440 display, a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 805 CPU with Adreno 420 GPU (another step up from the S5), 3GB of RAM, and a premium metal body - a first for Samsung.
Naturally, with Samsung Galaxy S5 sales currently breaking records, Samsung won’t be in a hurry to announce anything along these lines. But there’s more than enough out there to suggest that the S5 won’t be the company’s lead device right up to the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S6 next year.
