Sony has revealed that it has sold 5.3 million PlayStation 4 consoles since its launch in November 2013.
With the figures counted up to February 8, it means that Sony has reached its target of 5 million PS4s sold by the end of the financial year (which ends in March) with room to spare.
If that wasn’t impressive enough, it’s worth pointing out that the PS4 hasn’t even gone on sale in its native Japan yet. Traditionally one of Sony’s strongest markets, that 5 million figure should receive a massive boost come February 22, when its latest console makes its belated home debut.
As part of Sony Computer Entertainment’s official announcement, Group CEO Andrew House pointed to the fact that the PS4 was the biggest-selling console in the US territory - typically a stronghold for rival Microsoft and its Xbox range - in January.
Speaking of the PS4’s biggest rival, the Xbox One, Microsoft’s most recent figures claim that 3.9 million Xbox One consoles had been sold to retail channels as of January 23.
Of course, the Xbox One will doubtless receive its own sales boost over the coming weeks in the shape of Titanfall - an exclusive online first person shooter from the creative minds behind Call of Duty’s ascent to world-wide domination.
Meanwhile, Sony’s other console rival, Nintendo, has managed to sell just 5.83 million Wii U consoles despite launching a year prior to the PS4. Barring a remarkable change in fortunes, it’s looking like the big loser this console generation.
