Sony teases PlayStation Now UK release could be on the horizon

Sony has teased that the PlayStation Now UK release date may not be too far off, just as beta invites hit the US.

The PlayStation game streaming service was announced at CES 2014 for a summer release in the US, but unfortunately there was no word as to when PS Now will arrive in the UK.

However, speaking to TrustedReviews, Head of PlayStation UK Fergal Gara teased that it may well come to the UK in the near future.

Gara explained that the UK is a market that Sony holds very high in its estimations, partly due to the gamers’ sheer enthusiasm for the PlayStation brand.

“No plans to announce [PlayStation Now for the UK] as yet. But one of the things I’m proud of us having done here in the UK in the last year or two is bringing the best of PlayStation to the UK market quickly,” said Gara. “I think [the PS Vita Slim] is a good example of that, of bringing the Vita 2000 into the UK ahead of the rest of Europe."

"I think our gamers have a really high appetite to dive in fast and the PS4 numbers are stellar and leave the rest of Europe far behind.”

The strong PS4 demand and continued strength of software sales in the UK has put our country on the plan. Although Gara couldn’t give exact dates, he suggests it would be detrimental to PlayStation to delay a PlayStation Now UK release.

“Why wouldn’t we do our best to bring new experiences to the UK as quickly as we can. I don’t know, but I am certainly hungry to bring every strong PlayStation experience to our gamers as quick as I can.”

The PlayStation Now game streaming service will launch in the US in the summer, following a beta testing period that is starting now.

Sony will use the US a testing ground because of its broadband capabilities, but the UK is not “a million miles behind”, Gara added.

“There’s loads of good reasons to use the US as a test market, with probably the most fundamental being the broadband infrastructure. But the UK isn’t a million miles behind, so we look with interest and will plan accordingly.”
