Asus has confirmed that it will launch its first smartwatch this year and it could be feature packed.
Speaking in Taipei, Asustek chairman Jonney Shih revealed that the company is working on a smartwatch that will be launched in 2014.
Aiming to rival the likes of the Sony SmartWatch 2 and Samsung Galaxy Gear, the Asus smartwatch will be first wearable device.
“We will put our entire design thought into it,” said Shih at the Asustek end of year party. “There are actually many challenges in this area, and I don’t think products that lack special features will be useful.”
The Taiwanese company originally outlined its wearable device plans to investors back in November 2013, and will unveil a batch at the Computex Taipei trade show in June.
It seems the company has big plans for its first foray into wearables with the Asus smartwatch though.
“We’ll try to replace your watch by all means”, said Shih rather confidently.
An insider also recently tipped that Asus is preparing a “distinctive” wearable device for the second half of 2014 that claims to be able to stand apart from the competition.
There may even be an option to wear this “distinctive” product in a necklace-type fashion, rather than simply as a wrist-worn device.
Unfortunately, there has been no indication as to what form the Asus smartwatch will take, let alone the specs and features it could contain when it is launched later this year.
Hopefully, it will be a little more successful than the Samsung Galaxy Gear, which only achieved a rather pitiful 4/10 in our original review.
Other major electronics manufacturers are also tipped to launch smartwatch devices later this year, including Apple.
