Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 will reportedly scrap this design
The Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 will reportedly feature a complete redesign that introduces a flexible OLED display.
Samsung’s second-generation smartwatch will seemingly introduce a totally different design that puts focus on the same display featured in the Samsung Galaxy Round.
According to an industry source speaking to ZDNet Korea, the Galaxy Gear 2 will feature a flexible OLED display screen that could be a top selling factor and build on the failures of the previous model.
The original Samsung Galaxy Gear had a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED display with a rather large bezel, but Samsung is tipped to be scrapping this in favour of a more durable, scratch-resistant plastic offering.
The source suggest Samsung’s new smartwatch design is replacing anything that “looked dull or boring”, but fails to offer an insight as to what it will actually look like come its official unveiling.
Samsung has already confirmed the Galaxy Gear 2 will be launched alongside the 2014 flagship Samsung Galaxy S5 in March or April.
“We’ve been announcing our first flagship model in the first half of each year, around March and April, and we are still targeting for release around that time," said Samsung Mobile Executive VP Lee Young Hee. “When we release our S5 device, you can also expect a Gear successor with more advanced functions, and the bulky design will also be improved.”
Lee went on to say that the Gear 2 will not only feature a revamped design but offer “more advanced” features to offset the rather disappointing original Gear.
“Healthcare related functions will be the most inherently tied functions to future wearables. We see a very big potential from there”, added Lee.
The sources also suggest the Galaxy Gear 2 and Samsung Galaxy S5 launch will take place in London sometime in March or April, post-MWC 2014 in February.
