LG creates near bezel-free 5.3-inch smartphone screen

The LG G3 might have impressed with its super slim bezel, but the Korean manufacturer wasn’t content with its market-leading screen to handset ratio.

Now, LG Display has unveiled a smartphone screen which cuts even more off the sounding edging.

Continuing to push boundaries in ever narrowing mobile bezels, the company’s latest creation is a 5.3-inch Full HD LCD panel which features a near non-existent 0.7mm boarder.

To put this streamlined frame into context, a credit card is just 0.8mm thick.

How has LG achieved such paper-thin bezel witchcraft? Well, with the use of ‘Neo Edge’ module processing technologies of course.

The world’s first mobile display to make use of ‘Advanced In-Cell Touch’ technology, the innovative panel uses a new adhesive to bond the screen to the required circuit board and backlight unit.

What’s more according to LG, the Neo Edge removes the need for a plastic guide panel, helping slash the bezel further.

“With the growing trend for large screen smartphones, customer demand for displays with a narrow bezel is increasing, because it enables users to enjoy the maximum use of screen area without compromising excellent grip and design,” Byeong-koo Kim, Vice President and Head of IT/Mobile Development Group at LG Display, said.

“With this innovative product having many advantages, ranging from its narrow 0.7mm bezel and high resolution picture quality to its slim design and touch-embedded solutions, LG Display will continue to lead the growing market for large screen smartphones, meeting the expectations of customers and users by enhancing the quality of devices.”

Although it is currently unclear what handset the new panels will feature on, LG has confirmed the screen will enter mass production in November. The first devices are then expected to hit the Chinese market shortly after.
