OnePlus has set the date for the second OnePlus One pre-order window, and has promised to address the technical issues that plagued the first.
The first OnePlus One pre-order windows opened briefly on October 27, enabling anyone who wanted one of these impossibly-good-value smartphones to place an order like a normal person (previously they'd all been distributed through invites).
Well, that was theory at least. In practice, demand for the 5.5-inch phablet was so strong that it played havoc with OnePlus's servers, and many potential buyers were unable to log in.
OnePlus has just launched a blog post to acknowledge and apologise for these technical gremlins. The company claims that "tens of thousands of Ones are now on the way to users who successfully placed their orders," but admits that "we are also fully aware that the execution and experience for many of our fans was unacceptable."
The post goes on to explain that "in the lead up to opening our pre-order window, we more than doubled our server capacity to handle the expected traffic. However the amount of people signing in to submit pre-orders caused them to hang at certain points in the process, leaving many users unable to log in."
As a result, the company has spent the last 24 hours identifying the system's weak points and has mapped out a strategy to address them.
This should see fruition in the second OnePlus One pre-order window, which the company announced would occur on November 27 at 15:00 GMT. The company claims that this is intended specifically to cater to those unable to pre-order their Ones on Monday.
According to OnePlus, "we are taking steps such as enabling more servers earlier and and expanding account handling servers to the cloud to create a much smoother process."
The company rounds out the blog post with a quick FAQ answering section to help allay the fears of those tripped up by this flaky pre-order system.
