One prominent Facebook executive claims IMAX movies will be one of the “killer experiences” for the Oculus Rift in the future.
Speaking at the Hollywood IT Summit this week, Facebook’s VP of Mobile Engineering Cory Ondrejka outlined his beliefs that Oculus Rift’s uses will extend beyond games to movies and more.
Ondrejka addressed a wide variety of topics, but paid particular attention to the pending Facebook acquisition of Oculus VR and what experiences could be borne out of the relationship between the two companies.
“I actually both shudder and am thrilled to imagine what’s going to happen,” said Ondrejka. “I am completely excited about the intersection of Hollywood and virtual reality. I think what we’re going to see over the next coming year is going to be truly spectacular.”
He expects that CGI heavy movies as well as IMAX titles will work well on virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift, mostly because they already require high audience participation.
“The assets that were already produced to make the movie can be re-rendered and can be reused to create new experiences. I would expect that IMAX is going to be one of the killer experiences.”
These alternate Oculus Rift experiences are already something in Facebook’s plans for the headset, as the company is looking to create a platform “for many other experiences”.
“After games, we’re going to make Oculus a platform for many other experiences. Imagine enjoying a court side seat at a game, studying in a classroom of students and teachers all over the world or consulting with a doctor face-to-face – just by putting on goggles in your home,” said Facebook CEO and Founder, Mark Zuckerberg.
“This is really a new communication platform. By feeling truly present, you can share unbounded spaces and experiences with the people in your life. Imagine sharing not just moments with your friends online, but entire experiences and adventures.”
