Facebook and Instragram have a lot to celebrate
Facebook has announced that now reached the 1 billion active user milestone, while Instagram just passed the 200 million user marker.
Not only has Facebook just purchased virtual reality company Oculus VR, but it has also been blowing its trumpet over its very impressive user numbers.
Facebook CEO and founder, Mark Zuckerberg revealed the social media site now has over 1 billion monthly active users on mobile devices during an investor call.
At the end of Q4 2013, Zuckerberg revealed the site had 945 million mobile users, which means Facebook has gained 55 million mobile users in the past three months alone.
Zuckerberg also let slip the rather interesting statistic that over 20 per cent of all mobile usage is spent looking at Facebook, possibly due to Facebook’s mobile first approach to social media.
Over on the photography side of things, Facebook-owned Instagram shared that it now has more than 200 million monthly users.
“From documenting a passion for jazz to the protests in Kiev, we’re continually surprised and humbled by the moment you share,” read the official Instagram blog post. “As we exceed 20 billion photos shared on Instagram to date, we look back in wonder at the beauty and importance of everything this community has created.”
The photography app has gained 50 million new users in the past six months. When Instagram was acquired by Facebook back in 2012, monthly users sat at 100 million.
During the Facebook call with analysts, Zuckerberg said Instagram is “already ahead of where we want it to be”.
