LG’s 55-inch curved OLED TV lands in the UK with £8,000 price tag

The LG 55EA980W has officially launched in the UK, with the 55-inch curved OLED TV hitting retailers with a lofty £8,000 price tag.

Available to buy from today, September 25, the 55-inch LG curved OLED TV was first unveiled back at CES in January, and is the latest in a recent flurry of OLED TVs to make it to British stores as the emerging technology begins to gain traction.

“As pioneers of the World’s first and leading Large Screen OLED Technology, we are excited to launch and bring our unique and immersive, Curved Screen Design to consumers here in the UK this Autumn,” Andy Mackay, Commercial Director, CE, LG UK said.

Set to be made available from a range of retailers, the LG 55EA980W curved OLED TV utilises the manufacturer’s WRGB four-colour pixel technology and a streamlined display that is just 4.5mm thick. Featuring a gentle but noticeable curve, the new LG TV helps create a more immersive viewing experience.

Although the £7,999 LG 55EA980W price is sure to deter many, retailers recently claimed that 4K and OLED TVs could be on the receiving end of major price drops in the coming year as the new technologies become more commonplace.

“We are going to see big steps in 4K next year,” Jonathan Marsh Head Buyer at John Lewis said speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews recently.

He added: “At the moment there is a premium associated with 4K and we have seen that since launching the first 4K TVs a couple of months ago. However, as we’ve seen these technologies mature, they have come down in price and become much more affordable very quickly.

“I think that it will be around the end of next year that we see 4K come in at the sort of price points that we would hope to see it so around £1,500 to £2,000, potentially maybe halving.”
