LG Optimus G2 with rear buttons

A leaked picture appears to show the LG Optimus G2 sporting an unusual set of rear-mounted volume buttons.

Whilst rumours of the LG Optimus G2 have been numerous in the lead-up to its August 7 unveiling, we haven't actually seen much of the smartphone itself. This appears to have changed thanks to arch-tipster @evleaks.

The above snap, taken from a covertly filmed promotional video for the 'LG G2,' seems to show the LG Optimus G2 from behind. Usually this isn't the most interesting angle for a phone, but things are very different on this occasion.

As you can see, the mystery handset seems to have a prominent set of plus and minus controls just below the camera.

While this might sound a little odd, this does tally with reports back in April that the LG Optimus G2 would be too thin for a traditional button set-up. Korean news sources at the time claimed that the unorthodox solution would be to shift the volume keys to the rear of the device.

This also tallies with some of the general comments LG has been making about the G2. The company's Won Kim told TrustedReviews, "G2 is going to be something different, something unique and we have needed to be very creative."

Moving controls to the rear of a smartphone could definitely be classed as 'different' and 'creative,' we'd suggest.

LG last week confirmed that the next-generation Optimus G would sport a Snapdragon 800 CPU for a claimed 75 percent performance boost over its predecessor, not to mention the Google Nexus 4 and Sony Xperia Z.

It's also believed that the LG Optimus G2 will feature a 5-inch 1080p display, as is the current Android high-end norm, and a 13-megapixel camera. It'll launch in the UK some time in the third quarter of 2013.
