MediaTek has officially announced its new range of high-end mobile chips, with the ‘Helio’ line to debut on devices in the coming months.

Two new products have been unveiled thus far, with both the Helio X and the Helio P expected to land on a selection of flagship devices.

MediaTek has talked up the chips as offering both high performance and low power consumption, although neither claim has been backed up with detailed metrics at this stage.

The company did offer information on one of the chips, however, specifically the Helio X10.

According to MediaTek, he ‘X’ branding stands for ‘extreme performance’, and will make use of the company’s most powerful processors.

The Helio X10 will reportedly hit its first handsets in mid-April – with the other chips also coming in Q2 this year – and carries the codename MT6795W (look out for that in future benchmark results).

It’s going to boast eight 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.2GHz, and will be manufactured using a 28nm manufacturing process – nothing particularly overwhelming thus far.

Both the X- and the P-series chips will support 120Hz screen refresh rates, 4K H.265 4K video encoding at 30fps, and 1080p video recording at 480fps – that’s great for creating super slow-mo footage.

What’s more, future chips from the company have been confirmed to carry ARM’s new Cortex-A72 processors. These will be built using a more efficient 20nm manufacturing process, and should mark any such chips as distinctly high-end.

It’s not yet clear which of this year’s handsets will carry MediaTek’s new Helio chips, but we don’t have long to wait to find out, considering the purported Q2 launch.
