Halo 5 beta

The next edition of the Halo video game series, Halo 5, will launch for Xbox One on October 27.

Microsoft confirmed the release date in a TV advert that aired last night.

The advert itself was a live action affair, and didn't show any gameplay footage of Halo 5 itself. As part of an ongoing teaser campaign available online, it points to the game's two playable protagonists - Master Chief and Spartan Locke, the latter of which has been charged with hunting the franchise lead down.

So far, Microsoft's teaser efforts for the game have pointed to the suggestion that Master Chief is suspected of being a traitor in Halo 5. Spoiler alert: he isn't. Probably. It's unlikely though, isn't it?

This will be the second main Halo game since series creators Bungie left the property behind to concentrate on Destiny. Microsoft's internal developer 343 Industries will once again take the lead after the surprisingly accomplished Halo 4, which launched at the end of 2012.

Meanwhile, the launch of Halo: The Master Chief Collection (which featured the original Halo games remastered) late last year included a beta of Halo 5's multiplayer mode. It revealed, among other things, that the series would finally be adopting a Call of Duty-like ironsight aiming system.

Expect to see more from Halo 5 - including, hopefully, live gameplay footage - at this year's E3 show, which takes place in June.
