Facebook is rolling out a new feature, which will allow users of the social network to reminisce about items posted ‘On This Day’ in bygone years.
The new tool, which has been in development for a number of years, shows users status updates, photos and items they were tagged in on a specific date.
Users will receive daily notifications, if they so choose, while the On This Day updates can also be shared with friends. The On This Day page, which will be accessible through mobile and web, is only accessible to users, unless they decide to share items.
Folks will also be able to edit and delay old posts using the tool, which may come in handy if they spot something that probably shouldn’t be there anymore.
The launch comes as the Timehop app continues to be one of the most popular third-party apps among Facebook users, having recently notched up 6 million users.
Timehop performs an almost identical task, but allows users to re-post items from various social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.), cloud storage platforms like Dropbox and a device's photo gallery app.

The CEO of Timehop reacted gracefully to the news, telling TechCrunch: “My general feeling is that this is awesome validation that we’re doing something worth doing. One of our investors put it really nicely that if Facebook isn’t playing in your space, you’re probably not doing something worth doing.” He says the move confirms “Timehop is important and old [stuff] is important.”
He added: “Our mission is broader than just ‘replay your Facebook content’. It’s to collect your digital history from everywhere.” He concluded “I’m not particularly scared of this feature. I think it’s a really nice nod to what we’re doing.”
