Nvidia is allegedly preparing an Nvidia Shield tablet to replace its handheld Android games console.
Previous rumours suggested that Nvidia could launch a direct successor to the Nvidia Shield Android games console launched in the US exclusively in July 2013, but now it looks like it has something else in store.
A brand new product called the Nvidia Shield Tablet has broken cover via the Global Certification Forum (GCF) website, with an accompanying tweet describing the device as a notebook/tablet hybrid or convertible.
That could potentially mean that the Shield Tablet has some kind of hardware controls, building on those Nvidia worked so hard on with the original Shield and helping to validate the time spent on expanding the Android games library compatible with the gamepad.
The Nvidia Shield Tablet was also earlier alluded to by an FCC submission by Nvidia, and the mention of the device’s name on the company’s own website.
As of yet, we’ve not seen hide nor hair of any purported specs for the Nvidia Shield Tablet, but we’d be very surprised if Nvidia used anything other than its brand new quad-core Tegra K1 processor outed at CES in January.
Some recent benchmarking results and the prototype used to demo the Tegra K1 do give some indications as to what specs we could expect from the Nvidia Shield Tablet though.
We should see the tablet launch with a 7.9-inch 2048 x 1536p resolution, matching that of the iPad mini 2 Retina. It will obviously run on the quad-core K1 processor with 2GB of RAM and offer Android 4.4 KitKat as the operating system.
