Google will pull Quickoffice from app stores over the coming weeks, it's been announced.
The free app, which serves to allow Microsoft Office document viewing and editing on mobile devices, has only been available on Android and iPhone for a little over a year. Meanwhile, Google removed its £15 pro price back in September.
However, in a small post on the Google Apps blog, the company has revealed its intention to pull Quickoffice from the Google Play Store and Apple's App Store.
"The Quickoffice app will be unpublished from Google Play and the App Store in the coming weeks," reads the post. "Existing users with the app can continue to use it, but no features will be added and new users will not be able to install the app."
Why is Google cutting such a useful tool? Well, it's not. It's just pulling Quickoffice's technology deeper into Google Drive and ending it as a stand-alone concern.
At the recent Google I/O event, Google announced that it would be adding the ability to edit Microsoft Office files within its Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides apps. With such integration, a dedicated Quickoffice app is no longer necessary.
Quickoffice's demise has arguably been on the cards ever since Google launched the aforementioned Docs, Sheets, and Slides as separate apps back in April.
