The Windows 9 preview could follow another Windows 8.1 update
A Windows 9 preview could launch this autumn ahead of the operating system’s full release in 2015, latest reports have suggested.
With Windows 9 currently doing the rounds under the codename ‘Threshold’, it has been suggested that the Windows 8 replacement will be given a public preview later this year.
It is also believed that the software will be primarily targeted at those still using the Windows 7 OS.
Citing unnamed insider sources, ZDNet has suggested that a Windows 9 beta could just be a matter of months from being handed a public outing.
“Before Threshold is released next spring, Microsoft is expected to deliver a public preview of the Threshold release, most likely in the fall of 2014,” the reports stated.
The existing Windows 8 OS has split consumers, with many put off by the platform’s tile-based Metro UI.
Although recent Windows 8.1 updates have gone some way to making Windows 8 more accessible to traditional Windows users – returning the much missed Start button – it is believed that Windows 9 will further revert to type and appease users of old.
According to the claimed insiders: “The Threshold OS will look and work differently based on hardware type.”
Despite being just a couple of months from its expected arrival, the Windows 9 preview will not be Microsoft’s next OS release.
A final Windows 8.1 update is expected to be introduced before the Redmond-based company moves to its next operating system, although it has been claimed this introduction could be pushed out quietly.
