Samsung Galaxy S5 Active tipped despite flagship water resistance

Emulating last year’s product line-up, a Samsung Galaxy S5 Active has been tipped for launch despite the flagship S5 already playing host to its own dust and water resistant coating.

With the Samsung Galaxy S5 having been unveiled at MWC 2014 last month with an IP67 certified body – meaning it is resistant to rain, spills and dust but cannot be fully submerged in water for more than a few seconds – many had expected that Samsung would not revive the ‘Active’ brand for an S5 spin-off.

Now, however, according to the serial Twitter-based tipster @evleaks, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active is real and will also be known under its official name of the Samsung SM-G870x.

Samsung SM-G870x is the Galaxy S5 Active,” the teasing Tweet read. It added: “Coming to AT&T and Sprintm among other carriers.”

While the latest Samsung Galaxy S5 Active leak has made no reference to a UK launch, we can’t image the Korean manufacturer would omit one of its lead territories for such a key handset.

Last year’s Samsung Galaxy S4 Active built around the high-end S4, adding drop and water proofing through a ruggedized but svelte body.

Although concrete Samsung Galaxy S5 Active specs have yet to be revealed, we anticipate that such a phone would boast full on water proofing alongside a similar premium collection of specs.

The flagship Samsung Galaxy S5 runs a 2.5GHz quad-core processor alongside a 5.1-inch 1080p Full HD display and 2GB of RAM. Powered by Google’s latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS, the S5 adds a 16-megapixel rear-mounted camera and a secondary 2-megapixel snapper up front.
