Google Nexus 6 and smartwatch to be made by LG?

The Google Nexus 6 and the company’s first smartwatch will apparently be made by LG.

According to business sources, Google has chosen to rely on LG for the third year in a row to manufacture its flagship smartphone, following the success of the Google Nexus 5.

Earlier rumours suggested the LG and Google smartphone partnership would come to an end and Motorola’s new owner Lenovo would take over its smartphone manufacture.

However, the Gizmodo Germany sources indicated that LG will still produce the Nexus 6, due to launch in May or June this year.

Apparently, the Nexus 6 will be based on the upcoming LG G3 expected to also launch around the same time as the Google Nexus flagship.

No further details are currently known, but if the leaked cat photograph released earlier this week is anything to go by, both smartphones should pack quite the impressive rear camera.

The sources also reported that LG will manufacture the first Google Nexus smartwatch, which is supposedly being developed under the codename Nexus Gem.

Rumours indicate that the Nexus smartwatch platform will be announced sometime this month, with the hardware unveiled at the Google I/O in June.

This isn’t the first time an LG partnership for the Google smartwatch has been rumoured.

Multiple sources suggested that LG had been confirmed as the first Nexus smartwatch partner and also supported the same launch time frame as suggested here.

It is strongly believed the Google smartwatch will be heavily focused on Google Now, the company’s voice assistant that’s currently available via smartphone, tablets and Google Glass.

Any Google smartwatch will have to compete with existing offerings from Samsung and Sony.

Samsung launched a trio of smartwatch devices at MWC that all run on the open source Tizen OS rather than Android – Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit.
