Huawei Ascend Mate 6.1-inch smartphone hits UK

The Huawei Ascend Mate is now available in the UK, complete with a huge display and a surprisingly affordable price tag.

Though the Huawei Ascend Mate has recently had its status as the biggest smartphone around usurped by the 6.3-inch Samsung Galaxy Mega, it still has a formidable 6.1-inch 720p IPS LCD display.

It also appears to top Samsung's effort for raw performance, with a 1.5GHz quad-core processor backed by 2GB of RAM. Not bad at all.

Add in an 8-megapixel camera, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and a sizeable 4,050mAh battery providing up to 22 hours of talk time, and you have yourself a pretty impressive phablet package.

Especially when you consider the price. While we recently discovered that the Samsung Galaxy Mega would cost £459.99 here in the UK, the Huawei Ascend Mate will set you back a far more reasonable £335 over at UK online retailer Expansys.

That's quite literally a lot of phone for not a lot of money.

We went hands-on with the Huawei Ascend Mate when it was unveiled back at CES in January, and found it to be impressively specced but more than a little unwieldy. Its massive screen and square design make one-handed usage an absolute compatibility, even for those with large hands.

Still, that impressive power to price ratio gives the Huawei Ascend Mate a certain edge over its phablet rivals. It will will be interesting to see how it does here in the UK.
