Oculus has just announced Oculus Story Studio, an in-house project that looks to explore ‘VR cinema’.

What’s more, Oculus says its first movie will be debuting this week, in an effort to convert sceptics of VR as a media-viewing platform, as reported by The Verge.

The film is called Lost, a five-minute (-ish) short set to debut at Sundance Film Festival that changes pace and length depending on actions taken by the viewer.

Saschka Unseld, a former Pixar animator and director of the piece, said: “It could be three-and-a-half minutes and it could be 10. It all depends on you.”

“Often when I talk to people about VR storytelling it takes a while for everyone to understand there’s lots of parallel tracks.”

He continued: “There’s things that can be more interactive, things that are less interactive. There’s things that are more exploratory, there’s things that are more linear.”

The Oculus Story Studio team currently consists of 10 people – a paltry figure put down to the firm wanting to keep the project nimble and responsive.

While Lost is the studio’s first production, Oculus hopes there will be more to come, with longer productions already in the pipeline.

If you’re keen to take a gander at Lost, you’ll need to head over to Sundance and sign up to view the production, due to show all week long.
